Austria: Matrei-Grossglockner - A new ski area for 2008-9 in the Tirol
The resort
The village of Matrei-im-Osttirol is located at the foot of Austria's highest mountain from where you can access a newly created ski area. From December 2008, the Kals-Matrei villages will be linked to create the Grossglockner ski area.
The village itself is typically Tirolean, centred around the church and offers a variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars amid stunning mountain scenery.
The skiing
The Großglockner, at the heart of the national park Hohe Tauern, sets the scene for a unique winter landscape. Surrounded by the panorama of mountains, 3000 metres high, Matrei offers ski tours, tobogganning (floodlit), ice skating, curling and much more. There are perfectly prepared slopes (for beginners and experts) with runs maintained throughout the season to the base station. A well intergrated lift system means virtually no queuing and to 110km pistes. In this region you will experience a panorama of mountains, with the "king" of the Hohe Tauern, the "Großglockner", right in front of you.
